DescriptionTechnical description: Boxwood with ivory ferrules and brass keywork. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. Mouthpiece (probably cocus) socket-type; not stamped, grooved for cord with 12 grooves, socket about 2.5mm too shallow for tenon on barrel (barrel may have been shortened). Barrel waisted; could not be removed from upper section (evidence of shortening ?). Barrel has a brass tube inside, probably to strengthen the tenon after shorten it. Upper section: no speaker liner. Four keys (throat A♭, alternative side E♭₄/B♭₅; side F₄/C₆; cross C♯₄/G♯₅) in saddles, three keys in blocks. Lower section: Ivory ferrule on top, no thumb rest. Long levers are carried in a brass saddle; the F♯₃/C♯₅ touchpiece has a brass roller and is in line with the E₃/B♮₄ levers for L4, tone-hole and key for R4 mounted in a fusiform swelling. Bell discontinuous, its internal diameter being about 2mm more than lower section at tenon. All key-holes, but not the speaker-hole lined in brass. Leaf springs. Wood's patent (1819) on B and C♯ keys with brass roller on C♯. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T; throat A♭. L3: T; cross E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: cross C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; side F₄/C₆; side E♭₄/B♭₅; side trill key for throat A-B♮ and B♭-C. R2: T; cross B♮₃/F♯₅. R3: T; B♭₃/F♮₅; side B♮₃/F♯₅. R4: F₃/C₅; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keymount type: blocks, saddles, swelling. Keyhead type: flat, round. Ivory bell ring missing; cross key for B♭₃ / F♮₅ missing. Usable pitch: A₄ = c 450 Hz. |
