Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at the front; 3rd valve loop leaves from left and returns to front; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at the left. With double water-key with single touchpiece. With (a) tuning bit, shanks for (b) B♭ and (c) A, and crooks for (d) A♭ and (e) G. Mouthpiece receiver details on crooks etc.: bit (a): german silver ferrule, two lugs with ball ends; shank (b): brass ferrule, two lugs with flattened ends; shank (c): brass ferrule, two lugs with ball ends; crook (d): german silver ring matching shank/crook receiver; crook (e): german silver ring matching shank/crook receiver. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top sprung with spring inside hollow stem; alignment by 3 unequal lugs on spring plate. Maker: Antoine Courtois. Paris. 1856 58. Serial number: 3460. Inscribed on sides of valve casings and stems, and on bottom caps "1", "2", "3". Stamped inside 3rd valve top cap "3460". Stamped on bit (a): no inscriptions; on shank (b): "Bb" (circumferentially, letter height 4.3mm); on shank (c): "LA" (axially, letter height 2.4mm) on crook (d): "LAb" (axially, letter height 2.0mm) on crook (e): "SOL" (axially, letter height 2.0mm). Decorative features: Shank/crook receiver decorated at end with german silver ring 6mm wide embossed with floral pattern, and 32mm from end a narrower (4.2mm) similar ring embossed with greek key pattern. With original fitted wooden case, of merit in its own right. Painted black, with fluffy red lining; folding music stand fitted in lid; the case latches are machined from solid brass, precursors of the style now universally imitated in steel stampings. General usage of type: One of the earliest surviving cornets of the configuration which became the standard. Purchased by lender with, probably formerly used with and possibly supplied by manufacturer with cornet mouthpiece (3476).
