DescriptionTechnical description: Boxwood, with ivory ferrules and bell-rim, and brass keywork. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. Mouthpiece, socket-type of blackwood with an ivory ferrule. Stamped on reed side. Very short table; grooved with 11 grooves for cord. Two highly waisted barrels with a wide ivory ferrule. Upper section: straight speaker; speaker liner projects to centre of bore. Two keys (throat A♭ for L2; side F₄/C₆) mounted in saddles. Lower section: wide ivory ferrule, no thumb rest. Two keys (alternative side B♮₃/F♯₅; F♯₃/C♯₅) mounted in saddles. Brass rollers on the keys for L4. Levers for L4, tone-hole and key for R4 mounted in a bell-shaped swelling. All tone-holes under keys lined with brass (Wood's patent of 1800). L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T; throat A♭. L3: T; E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; side F₄/C₆; side trill key for throat A-B♮ and B♭-C. R2: T; cross B♮₃/F♯₅. R3: T; B♭₃/F♮₅; side B♮₃/F♯₅. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keymount type: blocks, saddles, swelling. Keyhead type: flat, round. Overall size: 703 with longer barrel (with short barrel 701.5) =the ; 650 to top of longer barrel tenon. Sounding length: effective length of barrels 35.2 and 32.7. Bore: long barrel, 14.7; short barrel, 15.3; upper section, 15.0; at C₄ hole 14.9; at F₃ hole 14.9. All parts stamped "KEY / LONDON" / (unicorn); bell also stamped "CHARING CROSS"; short barrel also stamped " # ". With boxwood reed cap and case also containing C clarinet (143), Bb clarinet (144), reeds and a cleaning rod; see entry for (143). Usable pitch: A₄ = c 440 Hz.
