DescriptionTechnical description: Brass, content copper and zinc with traces of iron, lead, nickel and manganese. Semicircular bow shapes; long tuning-slide, allowing increase in air-column length of c 254mm. Tubular stays on slides and at joint of bell section; narrow flat-section stays on movable tuning-slide bow and between the outer slides on the bell section which receive the tuning-slide. The method of seaming has not so far been established, but in both bell and slides seams can be detected by traces of small spherical pits as of inclusions, while there is not the colour change which would be associated with the use of solder or a brazing alloy. No stockings; garland width 20mm. Overall size: 1121; bell 119. Sounding length: minimum 2722. Bore: at c 70mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore), 10.9; descending slide, 10.8; ascending slide, 11.3; m.t.s. bore, 11.6 - 12.4; at c 438mm from bell end, 16.0; at 12.1mm from bell end, 95.0. B = 0.76. Bell cutoff = 900 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 12.0 - 11.3. Inscribed on garland (in lettering only 2.5mm high) "FAIT PAR RIEDLOCKER RUE PORTEFOIN No 8 A PARIS". Inside of bell decorated with detailed pictures of musical instruments and drapes, in gold leaf on burgundy red coloured shellac background, with a clear shellac varnish. Four drapes hold respectively harp and shawm(?) with fronds and music score; cittern(?) and shawm(?) with fronds and flower; bagpipes with fronds and a bud; tambourine, shawm(?) with heart motif and scroll. Ferrules and garland rather plain styling with concentric grooves in groups of 2 - 4. With fitted wooden case, possibly original. Purchased with mouthpiece (3535).
