DescriptionA late 19th-century ivory piccolo in 3 sections (head, tuning-slide section, body) with German silver keys, 5 German silver ferrules, a metal-lined head, tuning-slide, screw-stopper and (squared-oval) embouchure-hole, small finger-holes and cork-lapped key-hole pads. The maker is unknown. The sounding length (embouchure to foot) is 257mm and the overall length is 304mm. There is a 52mm (minor) crack at the top of the body. The instrument plays well. Technical description: Ivory; 3 sections (head, tuning-slide section, body); german silver keys; 5 german silver ferrules; metal-lined head; tuning-slide; screw-stopper; rectangular (squared-oval) embouchure-hole; small finger-holes; cork-lapped tenon. L0: B♭. L1: T. L2: T. L3: T. L4: G♯; long F. R1: T; dup B♭; C; D trill. R2: T. R3: T; cross F. R4: D♯. Keymount type: rod/pillar. Keyhead type: cylinder cup. Performance characteristics: Range D⁴ - B♭⁶ (sounding D⁵ - B♭⁷). Plays well. Usable pitch: Sounding A⁴ = c 452 Hz; probably intended to be played at Old Philharmonic pitch, A⁴ = 452.5 Hz. |
