DescriptionTechnical description: brass; twin water-key, the valve bottom caps have D.J. Blaikley's patent water reservoir; fitting for music card holder. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top sprung with tension spring inside hollow stem; alignment by key on upper spring anchor bar. Repair History: The original silver-plating has been replaced by yellow lacquer. The original short main tuning slide for Old Philharmonic Pitch is missing. Serial number: instrument 138250; valves 110008. According to the firm's archives [instruments books], the instrument was "Bb Mellophone as ForCor & I.P." made by Overdyk Jr. in a batch of 1. Overall size: 512; bell 214 219. Sounding length: minimum 2717. Bore: mouthpipe at c 65mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 10.5; m.t.s. at c 443mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 11.7; centre of valve cluster at c 1035mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (3,2,1) slides stuck; at 1359mm from bell end, c 13.5; at c 700mm from bell end, 20.0. B = 0.62. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 11.8 10.8. Inscribed on bell "N.V.A." within rectangle / "''SILBRON'' / (REGISTERED) / CLASS A" / trumpet and banner trademark containing "TRADE MARK" and "BOOSEY" / BOOSEY & Co. Ltd. / MAKERS . LONDON / 138250 / British Throughout"; on side of bell "PLATED BY BOOSEY & Co."; on side of valve casings and on stems "1", "2", "3"; on side of 2nd valve casing "PATENT 103729". The valve tuning slides are each graduated with a single ring to indicate the position for International (low) Pitch. Usable pitch: With the surviving long main tuning slide, plays at International Pitch (A4 = 439 Hz). Purchased by lender with and possibly formerly used with baritone mouthpiece (4514). |
