DescriptionTechnical description: Silver-plated brass; chromium-plated inner slides. Alternative valve tuning-slide for C. With water-key, screwed bell lock at joint and slide lock. Black wooden handle, ridged grip. Slide length 897. Valve type: lever-action rotary valve. According to the firm's archives [instruments books], the instrument was model 4035, made in a batch of three. Overall size: 1395; bell 203. Sounding length: minimum 3244. Bore: at c 35mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore), 12.25; expanding at 190mm from mouthpiece receiver to bore c 13.25; descending slide, 13.35; ascending slide, 13.35; v.t.s. bore, 13.85; m.t.s. proximal bore, 15.65; at c 754mm from bell end, 18.85; m.t.s. distal bore, 18.9; at 29.7mm from bell end, 117.7. B = 0.71. Bell cutoff = 800 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 12.7 - 12.3. Inscribed on bell "50 MEDALS OF HONOUR" within banner / monogram FB / "Besson / LONDON - PARIS - NEW YORK / MADE IN ENGLAND"; on back of bell near stay "307558". Playing accessories: Brass music card holder with ligature fastening so that distance can be adjusted. With fitted black side opening wooden case. Usable pitch: A⁴ = 440 Hz. Purchased by lender with and probably formerly used with mouthpiece (1291). Specific usage history: Played in Sheffield Langsett Road Salvation Army Band by Ron Davis (1975 - c 1977). |
