DescriptionThis violin has a soundboard of spruce; back, ribs, endbutton, scroll, and neck of sycamore; fingerboard of stained rosewood; pegs of ebony (3) and stained fruitwood (1). This is a trade instrument with a false Stainer label and having no design similarities to that maker. Its brown varnish has been damaged by a solvent which has spilt on the soundboard. The soundboard has ebony/sycamore/ebony purfling. The ribs and two piece back are lightly figured, the back figure going towards the bottom at the centre and up towards the edges. Measurements: Neck 129mm long; fingerboard 265mm long, 21.4mm wide at nut, 42.9mm wide at bottom. Soundboard arch 13mm; Back arch 12mm. Printed label inside "Jacobus Stainer in Absam / prope Oenipontum 1669", the 69 handwritten. Stamped on the back near the heel "Stainer". Tail-gut protector missing. Number of cracks on the soundboard. Heel has been repaired where it has broken parallel to the neck. Previous ownership: father of donor. Current ownership: Gift of Mrs. Gray, 1982. |
