DescriptionTechnical description: Probably african blackwood with probably german silver keys. Central socket and reed well lined with german silver, but bell socket has just a ferrule. Simple octave keys. The R2 plate is independent of the R3 ring although both close the brille and both are on the same axle. Depressing the low C key lowers the R2 plate and R3 ring and closes the brille. System: Simple L0: 8.1. L1: PP; 8.2. L2: T. L3: T; Dtr. L4: G♯; low B; E♭-alt. R0: sup. R1: T; B♭; C. R2: PP. R3: R; F. R4: low C; C♯; E♭. Stamped on upper section and bell only with "EXCELSIOR / CLASS / HAWKES & SON / DENMAN STREET / PICCADILLY CIRCUS / LONDON". Usuable pitch: Old Philharmonic pitch A4 = 453 Hz Performance characteristics: using a smaller reed than would be used for a modern oboe, the instrument makes a strong, dark and solid sound with good attack and excellent intonation. With fitted case covered in artificial leather. |
