Description

This boxwood oboe has silver keys, and a cylindrical reed well lined with German silver which is almost certainly a later addition. There is an onion-shaped balaster at the top of the instrument and an (ornamental) fish-tail touchpiece despite there being no third key. The keyheads are flat and the inwardly curving edges of the octagonal keys produces an attractive star effect. The springs are missing from both keys. Technical description: Boxwood with silver keys. The cylindrical reed well is lined with german silver. There are no ivory rings. There is an onion shaped baluster at the top of the instrument. Despite there being no third key the C key has a fish tail touchpiece. There are two vent-holes in the bell. There is an inward flange at the base of the bell. 2 keys Keyhead type: flat, octagonal keys with inwardly curving edges giving a star effect. Keymount type: raised rings; SATK. Stamped on all three sections with "T. COLLIER / LONDON" / sunburst motif. Springs missing from both keys. The cylindrical reed well and its lining are almost certainly later additions. Usable pitch: A₄ = 423 Hz. Performance characteristics: very responsive with very good intonation and an excellent, even tone quality. The low register is particularly precise in attack.
