DescriptionTechnical description: Boxwood with ivory ferrules and brass keywork. Six pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, middle section for the fingers of the right hand, lower section with keys, bell. Mouthpiece of dark wood with a long tenon and a short table. Grooved for cord with 13 grooves. Highly waisted barrel with two ivory ferrules. Upper section: on top ornamented with a thin groove. Straight speaker; speaker liner projects c 4mm into bore. Middle section: wide ivory ferrule, no thumb rest. Lower section: Levers for L4, tone-hole and key for R4 mounted in a bell-shaped swelling. G♯₃/E♭₅ guidance lined with brass. Bell discontinuous with an ivory rim. Bevelled key-heads. All tone-holes under keys have an inserted brass tube (cf. Wood's G.B. Patent No. 2381, 1800). L0: T; straight speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T. L3: T. L4: E₃/B♮₄; zig-zag F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; side trill key for throat A-B♮. R2: T. R3: T. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keyhead type: flat round; heads swivel on keys. Keymount type: blocks; swelling; leaf springs. Stamped on barrel, upper section, middle section, and lower section "GOULDING & CO"; stamped on bell: crown / pennant / "GOULDING & CO / No 117 NEW-BOND STREET / LONDON" / fleur-de-lys" and "PATENT". Mouthpiece unstamped. Mouthpiece tip broken. Barrel chipped. Performance characteristics: The swivel keyheads allow the harder pads used at the time to seat more accurately.
