DescriptionTechnical description: Brass. `Modèle français', with the valves positioned to the left of both mouthpipe and bellpipe. `Tuning-bell' model: mouthpipe enters 1st valve casing at the right; bellpipe exits 3rd valve casing at the right; main tuning-slide placed between 3rd valve and bell. With single water-key; fitting for music card-holder. With shanks for B♭ and A and crook for A♭. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top-sprung with spring outside stem; alignment by key on piston. Repair History: Water-key a replacement; shanks (a) and (b) do not quite match, (a) and crook (c) have similar plain grooves on the ferrules but the internal tapers are quite different; it is not clear which are replacements. Maker: F. Besson. London. Circa 1882. Serial number: 28336. Overall size: 302; bell 119. Sounding length: shank and crook overall air column lengths (a) 86.6, (b) 173.3, (c) single coil 266. Bore: shank (a) at c 15mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 9.0; shank (a) at distal end 10.0; shank (b) at c 25mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.5; shank (b) at distal end 8.5; crook (c) at c 60mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.5; crook (c) at distal end 10.0; instrument body at c 25mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 10.0; v.t.s. at c 424mm from shank/crook receiver, valve tuning slide bore 12.0; m.t.s. 12.0. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. on shanks and crook (a) 9.9 9.0, (b) 9.7 8.8, (c) 9.7 9.4 tapering in first 5mm, then parallel; external taper on shanks and crook (a) 10.9 11.8, (b) 10.8 12.0 (c) 10.8 11.8; shank/crook receiver taper 12.0 10.8. Inscribed on bell "31 MEDALS OF HONOUR" / monogram FR / "F. BESSON / BREVETÉ /198 EUSTON ROAD / LONDON", the `1' of `31' is not clear; inscribed on side of 2nd valve casing "BESSON" / crown / "BREVETÉ" in ellipse / "28336"; on valve casings and bottom caps "1", "2", "3"; no inscriptions on shanks or crook. Water key a replacement; shanks (a) and (b) do not quite match, (a) and crook (c) have similar plain grooves on the ferrules but the internal tapers are quite different; it is not clear which are replacements.
