DescriptionThis quarter-size violin has a spruce soundboard; a sycamore back, ribs, neck, and scroll; an ebony fingerboard, tailpiece, pegs, button, and tail-gut saddle. The varnish is a golden colour. The soundboard is jointed the centre and has well-cut f-holes. The purfling is ebony/sycamore/ebony, and the ebony strips are wider than the central sycamore strip. The back is also made of two pieces of wood. Measurements: Top arch 11.5 mm, bottom arch 11.5 mm. Neck length 101 mm; fingerboard length 208.5 mm, width at nut 20.4 mm, at bottom 34.4 mm. Labelled "Jul. Heinr. Zimmermann. / 67 New Bond Street London W". Playing accessories: chin-pad. With wedge-shaped black-painted wooden case with roof-shaped top, line with blue baize and with a white label "R. W. PENTLAND / MUSIC SELLER / 24, FREDERICK ST. / EDINBURGH"; one clasp loose. Cracks in the soundboard at either end of the tail-gut saddle, and on the bass side of the tail-gut saddle (1" from the end) to the bottom of the f-hole. Illustration references: G.S.
