DescriptionTechnical description: Ebony; 3 sections (cap with sponge chamber, sound-hole section, and finger-hole section to foot); 7 finger-holes, no thumb-hole. Keyless. Performance characteristics: Although there is no plug in the top finger-hole, the instrument has a three-finger tonic and a basic scale of G; lowest six-finger note sounds D⁶; seven-finger note (covering all holes) sounds C♯. Usable pitch: Sounding A⁴ = c 414 Hz (c 105 cents below A⁴ = 440 Hz). Inscribed "Beckett / FROM Wood & Ivy / LONDON". Possibly the 'flageolet in cocoa' purchased by Professor John Donaldson from Wood & Co., 24th March 1858, for 15/6d. |
