DescriptionTechnical description: Brass, silver-plated. The wrap and the bore profile are very close to those of the Boosey model ballad horn. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top sprung by compression spring outside upper stem; alignment by key on piston. Mellophone. Ballad horn. Nominal pitch: C. Maker: Köhler & Son. London. c 1870 1881. Overall size: 412 perpendicular to bell; bell 227. Sounding length: Assuming an effective length for the C shank of 63mm, the minimum sounding length is 2375. Bore: instrument body at c 35mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 11.1; m.t.s. at c 385mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bore 11.6; centre of valve cluster at c 647mm from shank/crook receiver, v.t.s. bore 11.6; 1187mm from bell end, c 14.0; c 583mm from bell end, 19.8. B = 0.52 (in C). Dia of mouthpiece receiver: shank/crook receiver taper 12.3 11.5. Inscribed on bell "1851" / double medallion / "1862", and below, "``MELLOPHONE''", and below, "KÖHLER & SON / Makers.", and below, near bell rim, "35. Henrietta St. Covent Garden, London."; on side of valve casings "4", "5", "6". The C shank and Bb crook missing. The silver plating is almost completely worn off. The 1st valve touchpiece missing.
