DescriptionTechnical description: Cocus wood with continental silver ferrules and keywork. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. Original cocus mouthpiece, not grooved for cord, long table (37.3mm; aperture 31.9mm). Long slender bulbous barrel with two silver ferrules. Upper section: speaker liner at the front of the instrument, chimney. Wood under speaker key had been recessed to fit the key. Additional side trill for throat A-B♭ and B♭-B♮. Interesting ebonite rollers on cross keys and L4/R4 keys. Wood under L3/R3 cross keys had been recessed and lined with cork to fit the keys. Additional side key for E♭₄/B♭₅. Lower section: Patent C sharp; thumb rest shaped. Leaf springs and needle springs. Bell continuous. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T; throat A♭. L3: T; cross E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; alternative side E♭₄/B♭₅; side F₄/C₆; two side trill keys for throat A-B♮-B♭ and B♭-C-B♮. R2: T + spectacle. R3: T + spectacle (forked B♭₃/F♮₅); cross B♭₃/F♮₅ . R4: G♯₃/E♭₅; F₃/C₅. Keymount type: pillars. Keyhead type: modern. Serial number: 2470. Overall size: 685; 617 to top of barrel. Bore: at C₄ hole 15.0; at F₃ hole 15.6. Stamped on mouthpiece "E. ALBERT / S.A. CHAPPELL / 2"; on barrel with star / "A. CHAPPELL" / star; on upper section star "A. CHAPPELL / 45 / NEW BOND STREET / LONDON" star; on lower section star / "E.ALBERT / A BRUXELLES" / star; inscribed on C keyhead "CHAPPELL / BREVETE"; on thumb rest "O.W.S. / 1896 / FORMERLY THE / PROPERTY OF / THE LATE / HENRY LAZARUS" and on back "2470". On bell with star / "APPROVED BY MR. LAZARUS" / star. Repair History: Tone-hole of upper trill key for R1 re-bored higher up instrument and old tone-hole plugged; new tone-hole has plastic insert to form seat.
