DescriptionTechnical description: Boxwood, with ivory ferrules and bell-rim. Brass keys. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. Mouthpiece dark wood, tenon on barrel, short table, grooved for cord, not stamped. Barrel slightly waisted (Cf. those of Thomas Key), with brass liner and tuning slide. Upper section's tenon and top 30mm of bore brass, to fit tuning slide of barrel; speaker liner projects almost to centre of bore. Lower section: touches of E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅ keys for L4 in Wood's Patent arrangement (1819). Levers for L4, tone-hole and key for R4 mounted in a parabolic swelling. Bell slightly wide and thick-looking, with wide ivory rim. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T. L3: T. L4: E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; trill key for throat A-B♮. R2: T. R3: T. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keyhead type: flat, square. Keymount type: blocks, Wood's Patent keys in long double saddle; swelling. Stamped on all parts except mouthpiece "Geo. Wood"; lower section also stamped "Geo. Wood / PATENTEE" / bloom of a lily; bell also stamped "NEW COMPTON STRT / 50 / SOHO / LONDON" / spray of leaves and below, "W. GREGORY / BASINGSTOKE"; two patent keys stamped "PATENT". The barrel fails to meet the upper section by c 1.5mm. This does not appear to be caused by dirt in the tuning slide. General literature references: James Wood's G.B. Patent No. 4423 of 1819; there is no British patent in the name of George Wood - presumably James Wood's patent was still valid. Specific literature references: Rice 2003 p.50. Illustration references: Vol. 1 p.104, Wood's patent R4 keys only (the caption is in error: the keys are for L4, not R4). Current ownership: Government allocation to the University, 1991. (C.H. Brackenbury Memorial Collection). |
