DescriptionTechnical description: Body and keywork brass, chromium-plated. Body single-walled with raised tone-holes. Four pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section,lower section and bell in one piece. Modern ebonite mouthpiece with a long table. Barrel cylindrical funnel form. Tone-hole through socket and tenon of joint between upper and lower sections. The thumb-hole has a straight `bridge' extending c 28mm below the hole to give the feel of a wooden clarinet; the thumb rest is mounted on a similar `bridge'. Clinton system to low E♭ plus articulated C+sharp₄/G♯₅ also activated by E₃/B♮₅ touchpiece for L4. Patent C sharp. Fork F using R3 possible by using R4 on F₃/C₅ or low E♭ touchpiece. Rollers on R4 and L4 touchpieces, F₅ key for R3 and B♭₅ key for L3. Fitting for music card holder. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T + spectacle; throat A♭ also for L1. L3: T + spectacle; cross E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T + ring; Barret action for side E♭₄/B♭₅ and side F₄/C₆; two side trill keys. R2: Touchpiece. R3: T + ring (forked B♭₃/F♮₅); cross B♭₃/F♮₅. R4: G♯₃/E♭₅; F₃/C₅. Keymount type: pillars mounted on plates attached to body. Screws support keywork. Keyhead type: modern. Serial number: 16063. This serial number is in the Hawkes & Son sequence. Overall size: 702; 631 to top of longer barrel. Bore: at C₄ hole 14.8; at F₃ hole 14.8. Stamped on bell "XX / CENTURY" / hawk and globe trademark / "HAWKES & SON / MAKERS / DENMAN STREET / PICCADILLY CIRCUS / LONDON W."; at top of upper section "16063"; at bottom of lower section " ♭ / 16063". stamped on mouthpiece "HAWKES & SON / MAKERS / 16063. Although bearing the mark of Hawkes & Son, the instrument was, according to the original owner, ordered from and supplied by Boosey & Hawkes: the old stamp may have been used to match that on the B♭ instrument, or it may have been made so soon after the merger that the old stamps were still in use anyway. Decorative features: Ligature incorporates "H". Playing accessories: Additional short barrel with instrument. With plated reed cap and double clarinet case, fitted, shared with (529).
