DescriptionTechnical description: The round, concave, stick of red-brown wood ends in a modern head with an ebony headface. The bow has an open, screw-mechanism, rounded, varnished, boxwood (?) frog. The hair is black. The brass button is shaped like a flattened cone. Measurements: Weight: 169g. Hair length: 467mm. Balance point: 264mm. Head height: 52.1mm. Head width: 21.0mm. Face length: 52.1mm. Tip diameter: 14.0mm. Frog diameter: 16.25mm. Period of oscillation: 1.30. Distance from pivot to tail: 102.65mm. Button length: 22.5mm. Ferrule width: 24.0mm. Frog + stick height: 48.5mm. Frog top length: 70.3mm. Repair History: The screw eye was possibly repositioned at some point; there is a hole behind the screw eye which might indicate its original position. Inscriptions: There are two scratches "II" on the underside of the stick over the frog. The headface is chipped on the tip of the thumb side and back corner of the finger side. There is a crack in the headface under the hair. With display stand for bows (484), (485) and for other bows. This bow and bow (485) fit a stand, possibly to be identified with 'Exhibition stand for bows, containing 3 large bows for monocords, two 'cello bows, 2 violin bows' in previous catalogues' however, their sticks fit securely in the stand with hair uppermost, so the stand was probably not primarily intended for exhibition but for storage and to facilitate the application of rosin. |
Other InformationSpecific usage history: Used by Professor John Donaldson for acoustical demonstrations in the Music Classroom, University of Edinburgh, c 1850 - 1865. |
