DescriptionTechnical description: Boxwood with ivory ferrules and brass keywork. Six pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, middle section with holes for the fingers of the right hand, lower section with keys, bell. The mouthpiece with long tenon, grooved for cord, short table; stamped on the reed side. Barrel waisted. Upper section: straight speaker, liner projects almost into centre of bore. Middle section has a wide ivory ferrule, no thumb rest. Lower section levers for L4, tone-hole and key for R4 mounted in a bell-shaped swelling. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T. L3: T. L4: E₃/B♮₄; zig-zag F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T. R2: T;, R3: T. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keyhead type: square flat. Keymount type: blocks; swelling. Stamped on bell / crown trade mark / "GOULDING . D'ALMAINE / POTTER & CO / SOHO SQUARE / LONDON" ; on bell, upper section, middle section and lower section/ crown trade mark / GOULDING & CO "stamped on mouthpiece "Ja Wood & Son / Bell rim missing. Upper section: no spring for throat a key. Tenon is damaged. Middle section: socket is damaged. Lower section: damaged under e/B♮ key, block had been nailed. The mouthpiece, also dating from c 1815, is a replacement. Originaly bought by H.I. Brackenbury as a pair with another clarinet by Goulding, not found in the Brackenbury Collection in 1969 or 1980.
