DescriptionThis important three silver--keyed boxwood oboe is dark stained and has no rings or ferrules. It has an onion-shaped baluster (a short decorative supporting pillar) at the top and a fish-tail touchpiece for the low C key. It is stamped on all three sections “T / STANESBY” / sunburst motif. The keyheads are flat and round with raised ring keymounts. The overall size is 590mm. Several present-day makers offer baroque oboes modelled on this instrument. Technical description: Dark stained boxwood with silver keys. There are no rings or ferrules. There is an onion shaped baluster at the top of the instrument. The low C key has a fish-tail touchpiece. There are two vent-holes in the bell. There is an inward flange at the base of the bell. 3 keys Keyhead type: flat, round. Keymount type: raised rings; SATB. The crack was repaired prior to accession. There is a crack in the middle section at the upper end which has been repaired with a gut binding. There is a chip from the turning around the bell. The crack was repaired prior to accession. Usable pitch: A₄ = 410 Hz. Performance characteristics: Excellent response and intonation throughout the range, with a fine, dark and even tone quality.
