DescriptionTechnical description: Brass with german silver trim (subsequently lacquered overall, not a normal practice for German instruments); inner slides and stockings chromium-plated; ligature clamp at joint; water-key. Valve type: Rotary valve, cork buffers on top cap, leather thumb-loop for actuation. Repair History: Some leak? or buzz? repaired by maker (letter of May 1960 and receipt of November 1960 refer). Damaged c 1990 when dropped in its case and the valve collided with the slide; one inner slide a replacement. A ligature screw fixed by L. Taylor when the joint became worn and slippy. Overall size: 1190; bell 223. Bore: min bore 11.9 at c 30; expanding by 100mmm to at c 12.4; descending slide, 12.4; ascending slide 12.7; v.t.s. 13.4; m.t.s. 14.8 - 20.0. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 12.7 - 12.1. Inscribed on bell "Herbert Gronitz / Hamburg". Decorative features: Guard of main tuning slide bow embellished with two intertwined snakes surmounted by an acorn. Original fitted hard case, with maker's plate inside inscribed "Herbert Gronitz / HAMBURG 1 / Große Allee 23" with tuning fork and trumpet motif. Performance characteristics: Excellent response, especially in upper register, good compass up to Eb5. With A5 typescript sheet which appears to be original catalogue description, possibly individually prepared for English speaking customers. Specific usage history: Played by Kevin Thomson as principal trombone in the Scottish National Orchestra, late 1950s; subsequently played by James Bertram in the Reid Orchestra and other Edinburgh symphonic and opera orchestras until 2001. |
