DescriptionTechnical description: Dark wood with engraved silver ferrules and silver keywork. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. Barrel rather flask-shaped. The upper section body is recessed at the position of the speaker key; the liner of the speaker key-hole projects c 4mm into the bore. Side F₄/C₆ and B♮₃/F♯₅ are mounted in saddles. The lower section has an ivory peg for a thumb rest; the body below it is recessed to fit the thumb. Levers for L4, tone-hole and key for R4 mounted in a bell-shaped swelling. Bell nearly conical, with ivory ferrules beneath the thinner outer ferrules of silver. All tone-holes under keys lined with brass. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮; throat A♭. L2: T. L3: T; E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; side F₄/C₆; trill key for throat A-B♮ and B♭-C. R2: T; alternative cross B♮₃/F♯₅. R3: T; B♭₃/F♮₅; side B♮₃/F♯₅. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keyhead type: saltspoon. Keymount type: blocks, saddles, swelling. All keys (except the A♮ and a fragment of the E♭/B♭ for L3) removed (possibly to recover the silver); mouthpiece missing; cracks in upper section, lower section and bell. Mouthpiece missing. Blocks for C♯/G♯ key replaced by brass brackets. The barrel has been extended by 18.5mm with a wooden ring which itself has an ornamented silver ferrule (possibly to convert a tenon-type barrel into a socket type), bored for a long-tenon mouthpiece. Cracks pinned. (Rendall Collection). |
