Description2 valves. Technical description: Brass, high-arched distal bow; semicircular proximal bow on tuning-slide. Three-part ball with groove. Distinctive design of mouthpiece receiver ferrule, matches various crooks. With four brass single-coil crooks and three brass bits, one of them curved. Valve type: 2 finger-slide valves: modification of the Stölzel valve with both ends of the valve casing forming part of the windway; the piston controlled by a touchpiece working in a parallel section of tubing containing the spring with a connecting piece passing through a slot in the side of the valve casing; the windway is diverted through one of two loops on the side of the valve casing, the shorter loop of the two when the valve is not operated and the longer when it is. Overall size: 554; bell 109. Sounding length: instrument without shank or crook, minimum 1752; with D crook, minimum 1920; overall air column length of crooks and bits: (a) 177; (b) 255; (c) 398; (d) 676; (e) 30.3; (f) 48, curved; (g) 49. Bore: minimum bore, 10.35; at 960mm from bell end, c 10.35; at 876mm from bell end, c 11.0; v.t.s. bore 11.0; m.t.s. bore 11.2; at c 210mm from bell end, 14.6; at c 198mm from bell end, 15.6; at 13.0mm from bell end, 69.5. B = 0.76 (in F); B = 0.73 (in D). Bell cutoff = 1400 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: taper on instrument body to receive crooks, bits or mouthpiece m.r.t. 12.0 - 11.2 Decorative features: Embossed bell garland and ball with rose, thistle, shamrock and foliage motifs; applied decorative embossed sleeves, one on mouthpipe and two on main bow, with floral, foliage and military motifs. Signature marks: Inscribed on oval silver plate on bell: "IMPROVED / & MADE BY / CHAS. PACE. / 49 KING ST. / WESTMINSTER". Performance characteristics: The input impedance and harmonicity of the air-column resonances are reported in Myers and Campbell 2006. Usable pitch: Plays 40 cents above A⁴ 440 Hz.
