DescriptionTechnical description: Brass; Valve outer slides enter valves directly, not having separately-made knuckles; the mouthpipe and the bellpipe enter the valve cases via knuckles. Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at the right; 3rd valve loop leaves from 15° left of front and returns to 15° left of front; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at the left. with single water-key with leaf spring. With shank for B♭, probably original. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top-sprung, the spring outside stem, alignment by key on piston and groove in casing; the springs are of square cross-section wire (to retain shape better when working). Repair History: 2 valve touchpieces appear to be replacements. Bell has been badly crumpled in two places and has been straightened out. Maker: by T.S. Guest. Exeter. Post 1847, probably c 1890. Probably actually made in France, imported by or for Guest. Overall size: 307; bell 118. Sounding length: overall air column lengths of bit 34.2, shank 96.7. Bore: bit at distal end (minimum bore) 10.2; shank at c 20mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 9.1; shank at distal end, 9.6; instrument body at c 30mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore) 10.4; m.t.s. at c 276mm from shank/crook receiver, tuning slide bores 11.4 11.8; v.t.s. (3,2,1) 11.8. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: bit m.r.t. 11.6 10.7, shank m.r.t. 9.7 9.2; external tapers of bit 11.3 11.8, of shank 11.1 11.8; shank/crook receiver taper 12.6 11.4. Inscribed on bell "T.S. GUEST / 35, NEW BRIDGE ST. / EXETER"; on valve casings, upper stems, top and bottom caps "73", "74", "75". Playing accessories: With sawn off shank bottom taper (possibly from the original shank for A) and usable as a tuning bit; music card holder permanently attached to a ligature tightened sleeve to fit on to upper third valve tube. Case of board with leatherette covering and felt lining. Pipe from shank/crook receiver to tuning slide unsoldered to pipe from tuning slide to third valve. Bell pipe slightly bent, dented at main bow. Slight tear on inner curve. Water key spring broken. Plating on valve pistons worn. 2 valve touchpieces appear to be replacements. Bell has been badly crumpled in two places and has been straightened out. Usable pitch: Old Philharmonic pitch. Purchased by lender with, probably formerly used with and possibly supplied by manufacturer with mouthpiece (2875). |
