DescriptionNorthumbrian pipes of ivory and nickel with a 10 keyed chanter. Chanter: Closed chanter made of ivory. Seven finger-holes and one thumb-hole. Ten, closed, nickel keys. Keys have round heads and raised touch pieces mounted on integral blocks with pins; leaf springs. Nickel ferrule at chanter end. Finger-holes have been files and undercut for tuning. Chanter stock of hardwood with ivory ring and nickel ferrule. Modern rectangular double reed of cane. Common stock: hardwood with ivory ring and nickel ferrule. Drones: four drones of ivory and nickel with tuning beads in tops. Bass drone in three sections. Baritone drone in two sections with additional extension. Two smaller drones of two sections. Each drone has a modern composite reed of a brass body with a wood tongue tied to the body. Bass drone has a piece of plastic glued to the end of the tongue for tuning. See additional comments regarding reeds. Connecting pipe: ivory connector pipe set into a hardwood stock with ivory ring and ferrule. Bellows: two, one original and one modern. Original bellows: bellow with hardwood boards and inlaid purfling; ivory ring around air intake valve; leather belt attached to board with metal plates; thin leather arm strap strung through leather loop; sewn in blowpipe with ivory bush; black velvet covered leather gusset; metal hinge. Modern bellows: cherry wood boards with a double laminated layer of black leather stitched to the boards; African black-wood ring around air intake valve; leather hinge and belt; leather arm strap strung through brass ring; rubber blowpipe covered in leather.
