DescriptionTechnical description: Cocus wood with german silver ferrules and keywork; rosewood mouthpiece. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. Rosewood mouthpiece with a long table, ligature and reed-cap. Barrel slightly bulbous in its lower half. Upper section: speaker liner curved, chimney. Speaker liner does not project into bore. Raised tone-hole for L1. Spectacles for L2 and L3, Barret action. Hole in the lower tenon to tune B♮₃/F♯₅. Lower section: Socket lined with metal. Patent C sharp and rollers on keys for L4 and R4. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T; throat A♭. L3: T; cross E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; Barret action for side F₄/C₆ and side E♭₄/B♭₅; side trill key for throat A-B♮ and B♭-C. R2: T + spectacle. R3: T + spectacle (forked B♭₃/F♮₅); cross B♭₃/F♮₅. R4: G♯₃/E♭₅; F₃/C₅. Keymount type: pillars. Keyhead type: modern. Serial number: 6002. Overall size: 703; 628 to top of barrel. Stamped on barrel, upper section, lower section and bell with lyre / "BUFFET / Crampon & Cie / A PARIS" in oval cartouche / "BC" monogram, stamped on mouthpiece and reed cap "BUFFET / Crampon & Cie / A PARIS" in oval cartouche; also stamped on reverse of barrel at bottom "6002"; also stamped on reverse of upper section at top "6002"; also stamped on reverse of lower section at bottom "6002". With german silver reed cap. Usable pitch: A₄ = c 439 Hz. Associated as a pair with B♭ clarinet (125) no longer in Collection, but see entry for B♭ clarinet (126) above. B♭ clarinet (125) and this A clarinet were on loan to the Galpin Society Permanent Collection from Lyndesay Langwill; a similar A clarinet (138) belonging to the University was removed by him in error along with (125) for subsequent sale at Christies in 1973.
