Nominal pitch: B♭ / A. Technical description: Silver-plated brass. Quick-change rotary valve. With water-key on main tuning-slide Alternative main tuning-slide for high pitch and low pitch. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top sprung; alignment by key on piston. Repair History: Actuating knob for quick-change valve obviously a replacement (unplated brass with diamond knurling). Inscribed on bell "CLASS / A / NEW CREATION" / "50 MEDALS OF HONOUR" within banner / monogram FB / "BESSON & CO / Prototype / 198 EUSTON ROAD / LONDON / ENGLAND" / five-pointed star. Stamped on side of valve casings and on top & bottom caps "7", "8", "9"; on side of 2nd valve casing "BESSON & CO" / five-pointed star / "BREVETE", all within ellipse / "122.033"; on underside of quick-change valve casing "BESSON & CO / BREVETES". Decorative features: Floral embellishment around inscription on bell. Overall size: 485; bell 118. Sounding length: minimum 1278. Bore: mouthpipe at c 35mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 9.1; m.t.s. at c 221mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning-slide bore 11.1; centre of valve cluster at c 593mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (3,2,1) 11.1; at 639mm from bell end, c 10.6; at c 278mm from bell end, 15.0; at 20.7mm from bell end, 52.7. B = 0.64. Bell cutoff = 1300 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 11.1 - 10.0 With brown fitted leather case with brown cloth lining, probably original; label inside lid inscribed "BESSON & CO LIMITED / PROTOTYPE / 198 INSTRUMENT MAKERS / ENGLAND".
