DescriptionTechnical description: Slightly conical pipe of heavy, dark wood with small hole at top for staple; 7 finger-holes on top, thumb-hole at rear; stitched linen rope wound around neck; bell diameter 30mm; ivory pirouette, diameter 81-84mm, formerly attached by string. Staple missing. Overall size: 390mm. Playing accessories: With two double reeds attached by string. General literature references: Malm 1977, pp.126 7. Specific literature references: Probably to be identified with the 'Indian pipe, eight holes, curious reed' in Hipkins 1885, p.113. Illustration references: Hipkins and Gibb 1888, plate XLVII, described as a 'Japanese hiji riki'. |
