DescriptionTechnical description: Brass. Bell directed forwards and slightly upwards. The mouthpipe terminates in a ligature fitting which could either be for a tuning shank or for mouthpiece with a parallel shank. Long main tuning-slide, probably longer of alternatives for C and B♭. Valve type: 3 rotary valves, with ratchet and pawl adjusters for clock springs.
Overall size: 532 perpendicular to bell; corpus diameter 330; bell 188 191.
Sounding length: minimum 2644.
Bore: mouthpipe (minimum bore) 11.4; m.t.s. at c 273mm and at 707mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore c 12.5; centre of valve cluster at c 988mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (1,2,3) 13.3; 1322mm from bell end, c 16.8; c 950mm from bell end, 23.8. B = 0.53.
Inscribed on bell "Waddell's / Patent / Sonorophone. / Manufactured by / Metzler & Co / London & Paris".
Repair History: Terminal shank or mouthpiece with non tapered shank missing. Probable alternative main tuning slide for C missing.
