DescriptionThis violin has a soundboard of spruce; ribs, back, neck and scroll of sycamore; fingerboard, tailpiece, tail-gut protector, endbutton and chin-rest of ebony; pegs of rosewood with brass oval knobs at end. The instrument is in mint condition, with little sign of it having ever been played. The soundboard grain is close and even, with purfling of ebony/sycamore/ebony. The varnish is a golden orange colour. The ribs and one-piece back have a deep figure. There are plugged holes on the back at the top and bottom. The pegbox and scroll are well-carved. Measurements: Neck 132mm long; fingerboard 271mm long, 24.2mm wide at nut, 43.4mm wide at bottom. Soundboard arch 16.5mm; back arch 16.5mm. Handwritten on the back inside "E. Drybrough-Smith / St Leonards-on-Sea / April 1935 No 6". Playing accessories: chin-rest; spare bridge. With wedge-shaped black-painted wooden case with roof-shaped top, with green baize lining.
