DescriptionC Contrabass. 3-valve compensating. According to the firm's archives [instruments books], the instrument was "C Contrabass", Class A96, made by Cave in a batch of 1. Technical description: Model A96. Brass. 3-valve compensating system: 3rd valve brings loop into windway which passes through 1st and 2nd valves, these have short additional loops which are brought into the windway when used in combination with the third valve. Two loops for sling; fitting for music card holder; water key on main tuning-slide. Valve type: 3 Périnet-type valves. The valve bottom caps have D.J. Blaikley's patent water reservoir, each with a nipple that can be rotated through 90° to release accumulated water. Repair History: Converted to doigté ministèriel fingering (3rd valve lowers by four semitones) by extension to 3rd valve tuning-slide; converted to low pitch by cranked extensions to tuning-slide outer slides. Overall size: 707; bell 328. Sounding length: minimum 4778. Bore: mouthpipe at c 35mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 13.5; centre of valve cluster at c 353mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (1,2,3) 17.25; m.t.s. at c 636mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 17.5; m.t.s. at c 869mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 18.6; at 2389mm from bell end, c 28.2; at c 1572mm from bell end, 39.9. B = 0.45. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 14.1 - 13.3. Stamped on bell "Class .
