Technical description: silver-plated brass; short and long shanks; two m.t.s.; water-key; fitting for music card holder by ligature clamp on 3rd v.t.s. outer (complete with lyre). Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top sprung by compression spring outside tubular stem; alignment by key on piston. Maker: Besson. London. Circa 1916. Serial number: 100923. Overall size: 330; bell 119. Sounding length: overall aircolumn length of short shank 89.3; of long shank 162.8. Bore: first m.t.s. 11.4; second m.t.s. 11.6; v.t.s. (3,2,1) 11.6. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: shank receiver on instrument body 11.8 11.1; m.r.t. of short shank 9.7 8.8; m.r.t. of long shank 9.4 8.6. external taper of short shank 10.7 11.4; of long shank 10.9 11.6. Inscribed on bell "CLASS / A" / "50 MEDALS OF HONOUR" within ribbon / monogram FB / "BESSON & Co. / Prototype / 198 EUSTON ROAD / LONDON / ENGLAND" / five pointed star; on side of 2nd calve casing "BESSON & Co." / five pointed star / "BREVETE", all within ellipse, and "100923"; on sides of valve casings, stems, top and bottom caps "10", "11", "12". Decorative features: floral embellishment around inscription on bell. With probably original solid brown leather fitted case. Given with and possibly formerly used with mouthpiece (4413).
