DescriptionTechnical description: Brass; demountable at three ferrules. distal bow wired to bell, probably not an original feature; high arched bows; plain wide bell garland. 2 brass single-coil crooks, with unusually short thick mouthpiece receiver ferrules. Technical drawing available from the Friends of St Cecilia's Hall. Please see http://www.stceciliasfriends.org.uk/ Decoration: Ball with groove; simple turnings on ferrules. Bound with heavy braided cord, 7mm diameter, of silver-colour metal-covered thread, with two tassels. Usable pitch: Plays c 20 cents below A⁴ = 440 Hz; with crook (a) plays in C at c 5 cents above A⁴ = 440 Hz; with crook (b) plays in B♭ at c 30 cents above A⁴ = 440 Hz. Performance characteristics: The input impedance and harmonicity of the air-column resonances are reported in Myers and Campbell 2006. Specific usage history: Possibly one of the instruments acquired by Sir Samuel Hellier (1736-1784) for orchestral use at Wombourne, Staffordshire.
