DescriptionOverall size: corpus diameter 545; bell diameter 275. Sounding length: segment lengths: mouthpipe 263; intermediate segments 210, 1281, 1463; bell segment 1415. Bore: mouthpipe 6.5; 68mm from bell end, 118. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 6.8 at end. Technical description: 2½ coils; yellow brass. Metal construction: mouthpipe, 3 intermediate segments and bell, with overlapping joints; seamed tubing; bell with main gusset and 2 secondary gussets near garland, garland width 35. Inscribed on bell garland "FAIT A PARIS EN 1721 PAR LE BRVN ORDINAIRE DV ROY" with a series of 14 crown emblems round remainder of bell garland. Portion of mouthpipe a replacement, 1983 by P. Barton, copied from mouthpipe on a trompe dauphine by Crétien (Christies auction catalogue 21.6.83 lot 10). General usage of type: Hunting instrument used as `extra' in the orchestra in 1730s onwards. General literature references: Morley Pegge (1973) re `trompe Dauphine'. Usable pitch: Plays slightly sharp of A4 = 415 Hz. Performance characteristics: Bright trompe sound; Blows easily with modern trompe mouthpiece. Mouthpiece (2162) was made for this instrument, 1983.
