DescriptionTechnical description: silver-plated brass; wired bell rim; inner slides and stockings chromium plated; handle; music card holder (complete with its lyre) attaching by clamp to outer slide; water-key; ligature clamp at joint; counterweight on m.t.s. According to the firm's archives [instruments books], the instrument was model 1724, made in a batch of six. Overall size: 1319; Bell 192. Bore: at c 28mm from,mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 11.1; expanding c 0.5mm in 100mm from mouthpiece receiver; descending slide, 12.1; ascending slide 12.3; m.t.s. 16.2 - 18.2. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 12.1 - 11.4. Inscribed on front of bell "Imperial / MADE BY / Boosey & Hawkes Ltd / London. / MADE IN ENGLAND"; on side of bell at left "HP / 338694". With original fitted hard case, covered in black leathercloth; gold coloured fabric label on underside of lid inscribed "Mayers & Harrison Ltd. / MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MAKERS / GREAT JACKSON STREET, / MANCHESTER 15.". Given with and probably formerly used with mouthpieces (4564) and (4565). Specific literature references: Mitroulia 2006. Specific usage history: Played by Bert Thomson in City of Edinburgh Band with mouthpiece (4564) from the date of its acquisition (April or May 1962) until he ceased to play with the Band circa 1975. |
