DescriptionSaxhorn contrebasse. Technical description: Brass; probably altered from original design. Fitting for music card holder. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, bottom sprung, alignment by key on piston. Repair History: Appears to have been modified from a smaller instrument, possibly a saxhorn contrebasse in E♭, by the addition of tubing between the mouthpipe and the main tuning-slide. The two loops in this section are not usual in saxhorns; the three ferrules in the loops are of different patterns (1st long & curved, 2nd plain, 3rd embossed); the tubing to 3rd valve tuning-slide interferes with 1st valve tuning-slide, stopping it 17mm short of full insertion (the 1st valve tuning-slide seems authentic, legs 113 & 115.5mm); the 2nd valve tuning-slide legs too long to allow full insertion, the longer leg by 17mm, the shorter by 9mm. (The 3rd valve tuning-slide seems authentic). Overall size: 829; bell 253. Sounding length: minimum 4995. Bore: mouthpipe (minimum bore) 12.5; m.t.s. at c 1197mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 14.5; m.t.s. at c 2015mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning slide bore 14.8; centre of valve cluster at c 2218mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (3,2,1) 14.7; 2498mm from bell end, c 18.5; c 2075mm from bell end, 26.15. B = 0.55 (as modified). Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 13.5 - 12.6. Inscribed on bell "T. DANIEL / BREVETÉ MARSEILLE" all within applied embossed laurel wreath in U shape / "10.000" / "SAXHORN / 7167 / CONTREBASSE", these three within ellipse, monogram AS with "AUTORISE" and "P.C. Paris" inside. General literature references: Haine 1980 81. |
