DescriptionThis instrument has a soundboard made of spruce; back, ribs, head and neck made of sycamore; pegs, fingerboard, tailpiece, tail-gut protector and button made of ebony. The instrument shows signs of much use and has a thickly-applied brown varnish that has chipped away in places. There is evidence of repairs to the soundboard in a number of places. The back is composed of one piece of wood, and there is one rib around all of the lower bout. Measurements: Fingerboard 206 mm long, 20.3 mm wide at nut, 34.5 mm wide at bottom. No inscriptions. With wedge-shaped black-painted wooden case with roof-shaped top, lined with green baize and labelled "FROM / T.W. UPCOTT'S / MUSICAL INSTRUMENT / WAREHOUSE / 26. EDGWARE ROAD. LONDON, W"; hinge broken. Bridge missing; marks on the soundboard indicate where it has been. Evidence of repairs to the soundboard in a number of places. Associated with bow (1009). Previous ownership: Purchased by H.I. Brackenbury at Puttick & Simpson, 18th April 1929, with case and bow (lot 155) for £1/17/6. Current ownership: Government allocation to the University, 1991.
