DescriptionTechnical description: Boxwood with brass ferrules and keywork. Four pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, one-piece body and bell. Barrel and bell of lighter-coloured wood; mouthpiece of cocus. Speaker curved, chimney on the front of the instrument. Standard Boehm system. Ring holes have brass inserts. L0: T + ring F₄/C♮₆; speaker. L1: T + ring F♯₄; throat A♮; throat A♭. L2: T + E♭₄/ B♭₅ corresponding ring. L3: T; cross E♭₄/ B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; F₃/C♮₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T + ring; E♭₄/ B♭₅ via correspondence; trills 1-2-3. R2: T + ring B♮₃/F♯₅; B♭ via correspondence. R3: T + ring B♮₃/F♯₅; B♭ via correspondence; cross B♮₃/F♯₅. R4: G♯₃/E♭₅; E₃/B♮₄; F₃/C♮₅; F♯₃/C♯₅. Keymount type: pillars. Keyhead type: saltspoon. Overall size: 634; 569 to top of barrel. Bore: 15.2. Stamped twice on body with lyre / "F. TOURNIER / & P. GOUMAS / A PARIS" in oval cartouche / monogram, possibly "TG"; no inscriptions on barrel or bell; stamped on mouthpiece "BUFFET / Crampon & Cie / A PARIS" in oval cartouche. Repair History: Body shortened. Tenon on barrel slips into body. Barrel and bell probably replacements; mouthpiece a replacement. Keywork well worn. Bell rim loose. Usable pitch: With mouthpiece pulled out 7mm, plays at A₄ = c 454 Hz. Performance characteristics: The body may have been shortened to raise the pitch of the instrument. |
