DescriptionTechnical description: Rosewood with silver keys and four silver ferrules at reed well, sockets and bell. There is a small onion shaped baluster at the top of the instrument. Sockets and reed well are unlined. This instrument is very similar to (71), the turning and silver work being virtually identical. The low B and low B♭ keys are not linked, to play low B♭ it is necessary to press both keys. All the keys are levers except the octave key. There is a slight inward flange at the base of the bell. System: 12 keys L0: 8. L1: PP. L2: T. L3: TT. L4: G♯; low B♭; low B. R0: sup. R1: TT; B♭; C. R2: T. R3: T; F. R4: low C; F♯; C♯; E♭. The F♯ is to the right of the low C key, the E♭ is below it, and the C♯ key over the C and slightly below it; slurring between E♭ and low C or C♯ is made possible by a see-saw pivoted between the two keys and touching both - the change of notes is performed by sliding the finger along the see-saw bar. Keymount type: pillars. Keyhead type: cup. Stamped on all three sections "Brod"; serial number "78" or "72" or "79" on the back of the bell. Usuable pitch: A4 = c 435 Hz Performance characteristics: Good response and intonation using a modern reed. The instrument can be played virtually ignoring the keys some of which produce notes which are harsh in tone quality. |
