DescriptionTechnical description: Rosewood with german silver keys and ferrules. The crook well is lined with german silver. In common with most German instruments of this period, most of the keys on this instrument are levers; the only axles are attached to the first octave key, to the rings and plates and to the R4 keys. The long L4 keys have the E♭-alt outside, the F-alt inside and the low B below and between the other two. There is no connection between the low C key and the right-hand touches or the brille mechanism. System: Simple system L0: 8; B♭-alt. L1: PP. L2: T. L3: PL; C♯tr. L4: G♯; E♭-alt; F-alt; low B. R0: sup (also ring). R1: PL; B♭; C. R2: R. R3: PL; F. R4: low C; C♯; E♭.open standing forked F vent. Signature/Marks: All sections are stamped with bird on branch motif / “O MOENNIG / LEIPZIG” / monogram of M superimposed on a circle. Performance characteristics: The damage to the mechanism of the middle section prevented a full assessment of this instrument. However using the relatively few available notes and with the tuning slide fully in the instrument plays with a strong, dense tone quality, with precise attack and good intonation. The pitch is A₄ = 430 Hz. With the tuning slide fully out the tone becomes rather `foggy' and attack and intonation are unpredictable; the pitch is A₄ = 420 Hz. Usable pitch: This instrument was probably built to play at Diapason Normal (A₄ = 435 Hz), but in its present condition the highest pitch it will play at is A₄ = 430 Hz. |
