DescriptionTechnical description: Single coil; small simple central ball without groove; wooden spacing block; rings on insides of both bows. Blue and white cord binding. External diameter of main tubing: 11.7. Weight excluding mouthpiece but including wood block and cord: 485g. Inscribed on bell garland "JOHANN WILHELM / HAAS / NÜRNBERG" and "IWH" / leaping hare facing left, looking forwards. Inscribed on one side of block in ink: "Jakob Pretori" (?) / "1791 8 febr", and on other side: "Giorg Lonniz P...." (?) / "I... 29 Jüni 1819". Performance characteristics: The 11th natural note serves better as written F♯ than F♮. Despite its condition, still plays remarkably well. Usable pitch: With mouthpiece (997) plays in F at about 100 cents below A⁴ 440 Hz. With mouthpiece (649) plays in F at about 110 cents below A⁴ 440 Hz. Decorative features: Three winged cherub heads on bell garland; five ferrules with turned decoration. Overall size: 630 - 640; bell 108 - 113.5. Sounding length: 1929. Bore: at c 90mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore), 10.0; at 965mm from bell end, c 10.7; at 753mm from bell end (start of second bow), c 10.7; at 269mm from bell end, 15.1. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 11.8 - 11.0 Bell somewhat crumpled: orginial length probably 5-10mm longer than at present; several dents; all three yards somewhat bent inwards. Repair History: The fourth ferrule different from and simpler than the others: possibly a replacement; patch on inside of distal bow; soldered repairs in middle of first yard and on the bell yard between the block and the ball. There is a hole in the bell where the distal bow has in the past been wired to the bell. Previous ownership: ex-Van Raalte Collection; failed to sell at the 1927 auction; subsequently purchased by H. I. Brackenbury from Sir Arthus Wheeler, 9 December 1929, for £1/10/0. Government allocation to the University, 1991. |
