Description

This fine quality trade instrument has a soundboard of spruce; back, ribs, scroll and neck of sycamore; fingerboard, tailpiece, tail-gut protector and endbutton of ebony; and pegs of stained holly(?). The soundboard has a close grain in the centre, getting wider towards the edges. The instrument has ebony/sycamore/ebony purfling and a golden varnish that has worn away over all of the lower bout and parts of the upper bout. There are plugged holes at the top and bottom for cramping to the blocks. The back is made from two pieces of wood with very fine figure rising from the edges to the centre. There is also fine figure on the ribs. The finely-cut scroll has been grafted onto the neck. Measurements: Neck length 135mm; fingerboard length 263mm, width at nut 22.9mm, at bottom 40.2mm. Soundboard arch 14mm; Back arch 14mm. Printed label "Joseph Guarnerius fecit / Cremonae anno 17" with typical IHS crossed monogram. Playing accessories: metal mute, strings, rosin. With wedge-shaped violin case of polished maple with roof-shaped top, lined with purple velvet, with key, hinges and clasp of lock detached; with velvet and yellow silk cover embroidered "JGD".
