DescriptionNominal pitch: B♭ / A. 3 valves. Technical description: Brass. In three sections with two ligature tuning joints. The bore profile is that of a B♭ cornet rather than a B♭ trumpet. Three valves in first section.The middle section is a corps de rechange, with alternatives for B♭ and A. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves; bottom sprung. Signature marks: Inscribed on bell "HAWKES & SON / Denman Street / Piccadilly Circus / LONDON / 49724". Inscribed on middle section "B♭". Inscribed on valves "7", "8 / Hawkes & Son / London", "9". Repair History: Two middle sections for A made 1993-94 by S.Benzie, one straight, the other looped. Overall size: with B♭ corps de rechange with both slides in and without mouthpiece, 1265; with mouthpiece (878), 1315; bell116. Sounding length: minimum 1265 (in B♭); 1339 (in A). Bore: mouthpipe at c 40mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) 8.8; centre of valve cluster at c 305mm from mouthpiece receiver, v.t.s. bore (1,2,3) 11.45; ligature joint at 349-416mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning-slide bore 11.35; at 616mm from bell end, c 11.5; ligature joint at 695-762mm from mouthpiece receiver, tuning-slide bore 11.55; at c 242mm from bell end, 16.25; at 21.6mm from bell end, 61.9. B = 0.61 (in B♭ or in A). Bell cutoff = 1300 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: m.r.t. 11.0 - 10.0 Inscribed on bell "HAWKES & SON / Denman Street / Piccadilly Circus / LONDON / 49724". Inscribed on middle section "B♭". Inscribed on valves "7", "8 / Hawkes & Son / London", "9". Performance characteristics: Reasonably in tune. Notes above the 8th natural note very difficult to obtain. Usable pitch: Plays above A⁴ = 452.4 Hz, but ligature tuning joints allow use at Old Philharmonic or A⁴ = 439 Hz. Purchased by lender with and possibly formerly used with mouthpiece (886). |
