DescriptionTechnical description: Cocus wood with german silver ferrules and keys. Five pieces: mouthpiece, barrel, upper section, lower section, bell. Ebonite mouthpiece with a long table. Slender barrel. Upper section: speaker liner at the front of the instrument, chimney. Alternative side key for E♭₄/B♭₅. Lower section: Patent c sharp; silver rollers on R4 keys; thumb rest. Wood under cross keys for L3 and R3 recessed to fit the keys. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T; throat A♭. L3: T; cross E♭₄/B♭₅. L4: C♯₄/G♯₅; E₃/B♮₄; F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; side F₄/C₆; alt. side E♭₄/B♭₅; side trill key for throat A-B♮ and B♭-C. R2: T + spectacle. R3: T + spectacle (forked B♭₃/F♮₅); cross B♭₃/F♮₅ . R4: G♯₃/E♭₅; F₃/C₅. Keymount type: pillars. Keyhead type: modern. Serial number: 1135. Overall size: 688; 618 to top of barrel. Bore: at C₄ hole 14.9; at F₃ hole 15.5. Stamped on upper section "A. CHAPPELL / 214 / REGENT STREET / LONDON"; stamped on lower section "E. ALBERT / A BRUXELLES", and at back "1135", and on extra C# key cup "CHAPPELL BRÉVÉTE"; stamped on ligature "A.P. / DÉPOSÉ". (Chappell moved from Regent Street in 1863.) With german silver reed cap. Repair History: C key touchpiece lengthened; thumb rest removed. Bell cracked and holed with cork patch over hole. Silver ferrule on tenon of upper section loose. General literature references: Tyler's G.B. Patent No. 1308, 1862. J.B. Albert's G.B. Patent No. 23001, 1896 was taken out via S.A. Chappell but this instrument appears to be a very early example of the patent C sharp mechanism. Usable pitch: A₄ = c 455 Hz. Used in pair with B♭ instrument (119). |
