DescriptionTechnical description: Boxwood with ivory ferrules and bell rim; brass keywork. Six pieces: mouthpiece [not original], barrel, upper section, middle section for the fingers of the right hand, lower section with keys, bell. Mouthpiece of dark wood with long tenon and short table; contemporary but not original (the tenon is 1mm too long to fit the barrel). Barrel waisted. Upper section: speaker projects almost to centre of bore. Lower section: Levers for L4, tone-hole and key for R4 mounted in a bell-shaped swelling. L0: T; speaker. L1: T; throat A♮. L2: T. L3: T. L4: E₃/B♮₄; zig-zag F♯₃/C♯₅. R1: T; R2: T; R3: T. R4: T; G♯₃/E♭₅. Keymount type: blocks; swelling. Keyhead type: flat square. Stamped on bell with crown, decorated with leafs and flowers and / "GOULDING. D'ALMAINE / AND CO. / SOHO SQUARE / LONDON"; on other parts except mouthpiece with crown and / "GOULDING & Co". Mouthpiece unstamped. Cracked below bascule keyhead: a chip of wood has nearly broken away; upper sction tenon cracked. Usable pitch: A₄ = c 430 Hz. Very similar to B♭ instrument (943), possibly associated. |
