Description

Technical description: Rosewood with silver keys and four silver ferrules at the sockets, reed well and the bell. There is a small onion shaped baluster at the top of the instrument. Sockets and reed well are unlined. This instrument is very similar to (68), the turning and silver work being virtually identical. The low B and low B♭ keys are not linked, to play low B♭ it is necessary to press both keys. All keys are levers except for R2 and R3 rings and the octave key. 12 keys, altered to simple system. There is a slight inward flange at the base of the bell. System: 12 keys, altered to simple system L0: 8. L1: T. L2: T. L3: TT. L4: G♯; low B♭; low B; E♭-dup. R0: sup. R1: T; B♭; C. R2: R. R3: R; F. R4: low C; C♯; E♭. Keymount type: pillars. Keyhead type: cup. Engraved on bell socket ferrule with "Barret / 1836". This probably refers to the date of the alterations to the instrument. Repair History: The R1 hole is bushed, this was probably originally a double hole. There is also a filled hole on the side of the middle section which originally was the vent for an F♯ key, other markings indicate where the pillars stood for this key. This has been replaced by the present brille mechanism with an extra hole bored at the front of the instrument between the R1 and R2 holes. The original mechanism of this instrument was probably identical to that of (68).
