Leadpipe enters 3rd valve casing at the right; 3rd valve loop leaves from 30° left of front and returns to 30° left of front; bellpipe exits 1st valve casing at 45° left of back. Two water-keys, with touchpieces side by side. Fitting for music card holder. Valve type: 3 Périnet valves, top sprung; alignment by key on piston. Maker: J. Higham. Manchester. 1892 or just before. Serial number: 45787. Overall size: 322; bell 122. Sounding length: length of shank 82.6. Bore: shank at c 25mm from mouthpiece receiver (minimum bore) c 8.9; shank at distal end, c 10.1; instrument body at c 40mm from shank/crook receiver (local minimum bore), 10.1; m.t.s. 11.5; v.t.s. (3,2,1) 11.5. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: shank m.r.t. 9.4 9.0; external taper of shank c 11.3 11.9; shank/crook receiver taper 12.0 11.3. Inscribed on bell "PATENT / CLEAR BORE" / lion and unicorn motif / "EXHIBITION / PRIZE MEDALS / AWARDED / TO / J. HIGHAM / MAKER / 127. STRANGEWAYS / MANCHESTER / ENGLAND / 45787" / embossed circular plaque with lion and unicorn motif / "PRESENTED BY / JOSEPH HIGHAM / STUBBINS VALE BRASS BAND / WON BY / CONTEST / Augst. 1892"; on side of 2nd valve casing "45787". 3rd valve button missing; some leaks due to cracks; 22 mm split in distal taper of shank.
