DescriptionTechnical description: The round, concave, varnished pernambuco stick has thread winding and ends in a Cramer head. The open, screw-mechanism, ivory frog has an hourglass shape. The bottom surface of the back of the frog is carved into three ridges. The stick and frog fit together in an unusual fashion; the bottom of the stick over the frog has been squared off to form a flat surface, and faced with an ivory plate. In front of the stick mortise is a rectangular-shaped metal pin. The top surface of the frog has a channel from the front of the frog to the screw eye. The pin on the stick and the channel in the frog fit together. The ivory button is octagonal in shape. Measurements: Weight: 49g. Hair length: 638mm. Balance point: 279mm. Head height: 23.8mm. Head width: 8.4mm. Face length: 25.25mm. Tip diameter: 5.2mm. Frog diameter: 7.2mm (measured at 250mm to avoid winding). Period of oscillation: 1.36. Distance from pivot to tail: 65.4mm. Button length: 12.9mm. Ferrule width: 9.45mm. Frog + stick height: 28.05mm. Frog top length: 35.35mm. Inscriptions: The thumb side of the stick is stamped "MEAUCHAND", upside down over the frog; the stamp is 3.02mm high and 37.10mm wide. The button is cracked and has rust stains along and next to the crack. Associated by pre-1969 labelling and probably given with violen (335) and bow (336). Previous ownership: Possibly sharing some previous ownership with violin (335), q.v. Current ownership: Gift of Colin Marshall Skinner (great-great-grandson of William Marshall) and Mrs. Phyllis Barbara Skinner (widow of previous owner), 1965. |
