DescriptionTechnical description: Brass. Upward-directed ball, detachable by screwed joint. As with the cornet à pistons, the valve cluster is placed mid-way along the sounding length. With shank for F and four crooks for E, E♭, D and C. Valve type: 3 Stölzel valves with spring inside hollow stem; alignment by screwed pin which also locates lower end of spring; wax partitions. Repair History: Crook (d) is a cornet crook for G and is not long enough to serve well as a néocor D crook. Néocor. Nominal pitch: F etc. Maker: Schneider. Strasbourg. Circa 1840. Bell cutoff = 900 Hz. Dia of mouthpiece receiver: internal tapers of shank (a) 9.7 9.4, crooks (b) 9.9 9.5, (c) 10.0 9.6, (d) 9.8 9.4, (e) 9.9 9.4; external tapers of shank (a) 12.1 13.0, crooks (b) 12.1 13.0, (c) 12.1 13.0, (d) 11.1 11.6, (e) 12.0 13.1; shank/crook receiver taper 13.2 12.6. Inscribed on bell "SCHNEIDER / A STRASBOURG"; on sides of valve casings "1", "2", "3"; on both ferrules of screwed joint for bell section "3". Shank (a) inscribed "FA". Crooks inscribed (b) "MI", (c) "MIb", (d) "SOL", (e) "UT". With fitted wooden case. Crook (d) is a cornet crook for G and is not long enough to serve well as a néocor D crook. Usable pitch: With main tuning slide in, plays above A4 = 440 Hz with F shank 40 cents, with crook for E 40 cents, with crook for Eb 80 cents and with C crook 30 cents. Performance characteristics: Good response and pleasant sound with all crooks; intonation problems with crook for E (written G4 sharp sounding B_). Purchased by lender with and probably formerly used with mouthpiece (3351), but not a good fit.
